Sang Sang Asian Express Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

Sang Sang is my go to when I cannot easily choose a place to find food. I was thoroughly amazed the first time I tasted a piece of chicken from here and still amazed during each visit. To get straight to the point: I absolutely love their Chicken Vermicelli dish. I would never share it because I am too greedy to let a single morsel out of my mouth. The chicken is seasoned and cooked to perfection. It has a salty and charred taste like it was cooked out on a barbecue grill. The fish sauce along with the vermicelli noodles is just a bonus. Other dishes I have tasted are their chicken brocolli, chicken fried rice, and lo mein. All are pretty great as well. What is even better are their prices. The portions are huge with two heaping scoops of rice and overflowing entree on the other (see pictures!). Their chicken fried rice is also only $3.99! Nothing is over $10. Although I did find it weird for a Chinese restaurant to have a drive-thru, it is a nice touch for lazy folks. I would rather wait inside then let my car run as the wait will not be any quicker going through the drive-thru. The old man who takes the orders is super friendly and even helps cook the food as well. Go down to Shawnee and try Sang Sang Asian Express. It may not look like much on the outside, but it's definitely something your taste buds will thank you for! You will not regret it! Well...maybe you might regret it if and when the lbs go up...

This restaurant serves only top quality, freshly prepared food. It is amazingly delicious and way better than you might expect based on the outside appearance. It isn't somewhere you would want to take a hot date to, but the food is great and cheap! An additional note -- the food, while salty, is not anywhere near as salty as other Chinese food. I have severe health problems and am very salt sensitive, but I can eat Sang Sang with no issues! It is not only more delicious this way, it is also healthier.

At first I was reluctant to try this hole in the wall resturant, but after my first time at sang sang I don't ever see me going anywhere else. The place is run by one guy, who has a cashier and ocassionally help in the kitchen, so around dinner things can get busy and hectic. Long story short the food is amazing and cheap. Not sure about drive through, I recommend calling ahead or dinning in.

The more I come here, the more I like it. The food is always fresh, consistent & well prepared. It's a little far to go for lunch, but I still make the trip about once a week. The sauces on the Chinese food are too sweet for my taste, but dishes like the Chicken with Lemon Grass and Coconut Curry Chicken are just wonderful. Overall, a cut above most Asian restaurants in the area.

I came here today with my dad to see if all of these reviews could be true. From the outside, Sang Sang doesn't look like much. I have to admit that I was a little doubtful even after reading all of the great reviews. Thankfully, my dad and I were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food and the service. I ordered the Tofu with Vegetables (in brown sauce) which wasn't half bad, especially considering the low price. My food was warm, but I wish the tofu could have been pan-fried and a bit hotter. The veggies were really hot on the outside, but still a little too crunchy to be cooked completely. My dad ordered chicken with green pepper and onion in the brown sauce as well. This technically wasn't a menu item, but the cashier was still able to whip it up for him, which was nice. We both liked the sauce, it has a hint of sweetness to it that's a little different. My main complaint was the bathroom. It was scary in there and could definitely use a good scrubbing down with some bleach! Overall, though we were both happy and will probably return again. I still need to try those tofu spring rolls and vegetarian fried rice.

Best value for your money! Mr Sang is the man. Food is awesome. Been eating there for about two years. Never been disappointed.

I was craving Bun (Vietnamese Cold Vermicelli Noodle Dish) pretty badly. I wanted to find somewhere close to work and this randomly popped up in my yelp search field. Okay who am I kidding? I was looking for a cheap lunch and stumbled upon this place. At first glance, it looks like a rundown Chinese hole-in-the-wall with a sign that reads "$3.99 chicken fried rice all day" in the front. Cheap Chinese food, yay. (Disclaimer: I really hate quick Chinese food) But hey, don't let that discourage you from coming here because it's actually clean and spacious inside. I ordered the grilled pork served with vermicelli, which is basically 'Bun' in Vietnamese. It came out about 7-10 minutes later, not too long. The meat was freshly cooked over a bed of vermicelli noodles and the veggies were on the side, served on a plate. Typically Bun is served in a bowl, so it's easier to grab the noodles and meat but meh, I can't complain too much. The serving size was pretty big, and all of that for $5.97+tax! The dish was actually delicious and the fish sauce to go with it was really good - perfect balance of sweet & sour but not too thick of a consistency. Overall, service was friendly and quick, and food is ridiculously cheap and tasty! I will be back for lunch again.

I have a weakness for Chinese restaurants with a drive thru window. I was excited to give this place a try. They've cleaned up a lot since taking over from the Mexican restaurant that was here previously. It's pretty bare-bones, but that's ok by me. Food was smelling awesome while I waited for take out. I went inside this time since it's my first visit. I'm excited to see they have homemade sauces, including hot mustard. The sweet and sour is pretty thin, but the taste is good. The hot mustard will tear your face off, so it is just right. Their crab rangoon are awesome. I also had Cashew Chicken. It was tasty, but heavy on the celery and a little light on the water chestnuts. I got a big piece of ginger at the end which left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I'd have preferred fried rice over white rice, but I forgot to ask if fried rice was an option. I just returned from the Philippines and the last thing I want is another scoop of white rice, so I passed on that. Overall, I got a huge meal for less than $10. I'll be back.

After reading reviews posted by Kerry and Claudia, I was inspired to try Sang Sang Asian Express. It's very close to my house, it's cheap, and you don't even have to put on pants to pick up your food, you can just cruise through the drive thru. Well, ok, you should probably wear pants. I had hot and sour soup, which was awesome, grilled pork with vermicelli (thanks, Kerry!), and a crab Rangoon and an iced tea for about 8$.What a steal. There was enough food for two meals and it was absolutely delicious. While service wasn't what I would describe as exceptionally friendly, it was swift, and when you are going through the drive thru, that's what counts. I can't wait to try the (very affordable) chicken curry and become a regular at this gem of a culinary delight.

Absolutely wonderful food for any price. Does help that the dinner combo was under $10 which makes it one of the best places to eat great food on a tight budget anywhere around Johnson county! Love this place!

  • Cassaundra S.

I chose to order what other yelpers suggested, and omg!!! The coconut beef curry-- I've never ordered anything like it but it is outstanding! I also got an order of the spring rolls-- delicious and the peanut sauce that comes with? Yesssssss!

I love this joint. Just got food here and it was quite awesome. The V. Noodles n' Beef was spot on! I know have a place for Bun Thit Nuong. Nice!!! Go here for this Vietnamese dish if you love this Viet dish. Also, it is quite inexpensive too.

Ordered my meal to go and was ready super fast. Was my first time eating here and I will certainly eat here again. Ordered the fried rice and chicken cashew. Was great, and hit the mark. Very great Chinese food at a very reasonable price. I would recommend anybody to at least give it a try.

Great little restaurant serving asian food. Owner is there cooking all the meals. Been there several times and the food is alway consistently good. If you want a meal that is made to order and not processed. Also very reasonable priced between $6 and $7. My favorite is Curry Chicken. You will not be disappointed.

We always drive by this place on our way for sushi and each time I say I want to try this place. Well we finally decided to go ahead and go through the drive thru. I wanted to try everything on the menu but we went with the $3.95 chicken fried rice and the grilled pork with lemongrass. We were not big fans of the fried rice, but I suppose you do get what you pay for! The pork was really good and made up for the fried rice. We will definitely be back to try the other dishes!!

  • Ashery G.

If you're in the mood for quick and cheap chinese/vietnamese food, this is your spot. Entrees are anywhere from $7-$10. Portions are fair. Ordered the spring rolls that were nothing special, but nothing to complain about. Also got the chicken vermicelli and mongolian beef. Food doesn't have that typical fresh flavor that Vietnamese food is known for, but this is pretty much asian fast food and you get what you pay for. Will definitely come back for quick weeknight dinners when I'm starving and don't feel like cooking.

The man working here is super nice and the food is yumz. Espesh the egg roll. I'm very particular about my hole-in-the-wall Chinese, so they can haz 4 stars.

This restaurant space has been EVERYTHING. If you ever want to witness a hilarious conversation about the history of a space, come over to a family dinner at my house and ask my family members what used to be here. You will unleash a trip down memory lane that will last at least 30 minutes. Arguments will occur, memories will be questioned, accusations of inebriation will be lobbed. What I can remember in my lifetime are the following incarnations: Wylie's Grill, unoccupied, random Chinese restaurant, another hamburger type joint, another random Chinese restaurant, Mi Ranchito, and now Sang Sang. I am trying not to get too attached to Sang Sang, because this space doesn't seem to hold onto tenants for very long. But, dangit, Sang Sang is making it really hard for me not to get a little bit attached. Can we talk for a second about how cheap this place is? I don't really understand it. When I ordered my vegetable fried rice with tofu, I was super skeptical. I mean, what exactly was I going to get for 5 bucks? That's college days Chinese cheap. Maybe even cheaper. Hell, for 5 bucks if it is somewhat edible I am going to be a happy camper. I wasn't expecting what I was greeted with when I opened my takeout container. Enough food for three meals (and I am a runner, so I eat...a lot) and huge pieces of vegetables, tofu, eggs. Everything tasted delicious and nothing hurt. The broccoli was even good, and I don't even like broccoli. My mom got the tofu in coconut curry and I was pretty sad that I didn't get it as well. Heavy on the coconut flavor, which totally makes me happy. Coconut is delicious. So, here's to Sang Sang. Hopefully they break the curse of this place. I will try to eat enough tofu to keep them in business. BTW, this place is in Shawnee. I am not sure why Yelp thinks it is in Overland Park. Silly, yelp. And not to start a fight on Yelp, but to the person who says this is an "interesting" part of town...I am not sure what you mean by that, but there is nowhere in Johnson County that deserves "interesting" in the way I think you meant. Except maybe Merriam...no one likes Merriam (kidding).

Great Chinese food that's cheap and fast! Best crab Rangoon ever, delish General chicken, Mongolian beef, & beef lomein. Eggrolls were amazing. Spring rolls were so-so.

  • Jimmy C.

Excellent! This is definitely really good quick and fast fix for Vietnamese/Chinese food. I'm an Asian American and I have to say this is some good stuff. The place doesn't look like much but man the food is right on! I shall definitely be here on a weekly basis from now on. Kudos to the owner for opening this establishment and making it cheaper than the normal Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants.

This place looks like a hole on the outside, but is clean, friendly, and has delicious and authentic food. And it's dirt cheap. Can't wait to come back. I had the chicken with lemongrass- loved it.

That place is cheap, clean, and has good food!! The owner/waiters are really nice and I enjoyed my chicken fried rice and shrimp spring rolls very much! Would definitely come back again!

  • JD G.

My wife and I tried this place for the first time this evening. Seeing a chinese restaurant with a drive-thru does seem a little sketchy, but it was delicious. We ordered the Coconut Curry Beef, Chicken Lemon Grass, Crab Rangoon, and fresh spring rolls with shrimp. It was a lot of food for 20 bucks! The negative- the spring rolls were just so so. There was not a lot of flavor and the peanut sauce wasn't bad, but wasn't great. Some basil or cilantro would have really brightened these up. The positive- the Coconut Curry beef was very good. I liked the curry sauce they use as it had a tiny hit of heat. The crab rangoon were very delicious and slightly above what you would find at most other chinese restaurants. The winner of the evening was the Chicken Lemon Grass. It had a lot of flavor and the fish sauce that it came with perfectly balanced the dish. Not too fishy and had a nice vinegary bite.

Great food!!! Every thing tasted so fresh and delicious. I have been here twice and each time the meat has been grilled perfectly with fresh vermincilli and vegetables. I wish they were not so far away. We need a Sang Sang in wyandotte county.

It took me a long time to summon the courage to eat at a drive thru Asian restaurant. I was very sceptical that it could be any good, since I'm a bit of a food snob (Even The American Restaurant failed to impress me!) I didn't think you could possibly get good 'sit down' food from a drive thru. Bit was I wrong! I eat here AT LEAST once a week. I'd eat here more often but I'm afraid they'll think I can't cook! :-)

Best Chinese food I've had in a long time! They're so hard to come by! Everything tastes fresh and they have a drive through!

I love this place. I was a little sad when Mi Ranchito left this space but have been more than glad to have Sang Sang in it's place. Having moved to Kansas City from Los Angeles I was really missing having a great delivery place or at the very least a great take out joint near by. This fits that bill and beyond. I have always had great service. We have ordered by phone and picked up the food quite a few times now and he always remembers us and asks about our dog and is generally a very pleasant man. It makes not having someone deliver my favorite dishes right to my door a little easier to handle. I like seeing the owner. The food is really great and made fresh as you order. There are no surprises and the recipes seem to be fairly true to authentic. I have tried many things on the menu and they were all great but I have settled into being a little in love with the coconut curry chicken so it's hard to part from that when I get the craving. My boyfriend always gets the General Tso's. While many times at other places I find this dish to be too sweet and too breaded, this version is pretty close to perfection. The sauce is so good that it even gets him to eat the broccoli. It's a good place that I hope people will find and support. EAT HERE! Call ahead to place your order to avoid longer wait times.

I don't know what those earlier reviewers are talking about, because I've never received bad service, nor poor food. This is an EXCEPTIONAL place. Don't let the outside appearance fool you. The owner/chef is the same man who ran Sung Son Vietnamese Bistro in Westport. I went there for years -- their food was excellent. Delicious mussels, wonderful pho... But when I was between jobs, I didn't visit the restaurant for a long time, and it closed. On a whim my fiance and I decided to try Sang Sang about a week ago, since we saw that it had just sprang up. To our surprise, it was the former Sung Son owner! He remembered us (after two years of not seeing him!) and was very happy to see us. He shook our hands and chatted with us. :) It became clearer why there were some Vietnamese options on the menu! My fiance ordered the General Tsao's Chicken w/ fried rice, and I ordered the Pork with Lemongrass w/fried rice. We also got an order of crab rangoons. My fiance stated that it was the best General's Chicken he's ever had. And I tasted it -- it was really good! Very light breading, and HUGE hunks of tender chicken. Not gummy, not dry and stringy. Enough to really fill you up. Trust me, I've been to most takeout places (Palace Express (RIP my favorite big portion place!), New Peking, China Star, Wok 'n Roll, New Chinatown, just to name a few) and this beat them all. The Pork with Lemongrass was SO TASTY. It left a delicate lemongrass flavor at the end, and the pork was crispy and flavorful. The fried rice wasn't greasy and had nice flavor as well -- not bland, like I'm used to. The crab rangoon was dense and very savory, my favorite. I'm not a fan of squishy, sweet crab rangoon. Warning - about a ten minute wait for food, because this place is not like McDonald's! He goes to the back and cooks the food fresh. It takes time. Overall, I had a really good experience, and the food reminded me of all the flavors I missed from his old restaurant. He even had his jasmine tea available. I recommend it! He was polite and friendly as ever. I've already turned more friends on to this place, and I will definitely be coming back. If you read through all this, thanks! This is my first Yelp review.

You know the old saying "don't judge a book by its cover", well this place is a perfect example of that pearl of wisdom. From the outside this place looks like a rundown dump in the middle of an "interesting" part of town. When you pull in to the parking lot for the first time you are going to ask yourself "am I really about to eat here"? Rest assured, once you step inside you will be relieved. The restaurant is clean and organized, but this review has nothing to do with the ambiance of the dining room, it's all about the food. I can sum up the food in a few words; fresh, hot, made to order and most importantly delicious. The chef/owner clearly takes great pride in the quality of the food and it really shows in every bite. The menu is simple and relatively small but everything is done very well. Everything is made fresh when you order it, which means this is definitely not "fast" Chinese food. They do have a drive through, but don't expect things to come out fast just because you are in your car. If you want crappy Asian drive through food then go to Panda Express. This place is the real deal and everything on the menu is outstanding, I'm already looking forward to retuning.

Shawnee needed a great Chinese restaurant. Sang Sang next to the Waffle House on 75th Street and Nieman Rd is not fancy or pricey. The food is amazing and the prices are very affordable. Plus, the portion sizes are generous. An example of the affordability is my purchase today. Six crab ragoon and beef Lo Mein (enough for two servings) cost $11.10. Sang Sang has a bit of a hole-in-the-wall feel. Although, the owner and minimal staff are nice and the place is clean. If you do not enjoy dining in this type of environment there is a drive-thru. I find myself craving their food and my ultimate goal is to try everything on the menu. Definitely try this restaurant out.

This place surprised the crap outta me! My partner and I were literally just wanting some fast Chinese food to eat and go, but as soon as we had our first bites, we were blindsided on how unbelievably good this fast food joint was. He got the Vegetarian Tofu Chop Suey. It was great! The brown sauce that it was in was seasoned well. There were plenty of Asian veggies that we both loved, such as bamboo, water chestnuts, and was just filled to the brim with veggies. However...the winner of getting the better food was...ME! I got the Chicken and Brocolli, which I was expecting to be your run of the mill Chinese staple...but boy was the white sauce that it was in packed so much flavor! Ugh I can't stop gushing about how good that dish was. Brocolli was cooked well, not too mushy and not undercooked. The chicken was tender seasoned well and being in that sauce just made them even better. For filling their to go styrofoam boxes to the brim and charging only around $6, made for an absolute steal of a deal! Will definitely be coming back here. Move over Panda Express, Sang Sang just blew you outta the water for having the best Chinese Drive Thru food for me! It may not be as fast as Mcdonalds (Sang Sang got two entree meals out in about 5min), but I'd gladly wait the extra minutes to get some quality and fresh Chinese cuisine. P.S. These entrees can easily be shared with two people. I had to take a break to finish mine, because of how much food they give you! Perfect for lunch dates! :) Happy Eating!

My wife and I really enjoy the food here. We have not found anything that we would not recommend. The egg drop soup is spot on, the sauces are splendid. One and only bad thing (according to my wife) is the mushrooms are cut larger than the chicken.

Finally a Chinese restaurant in town where I actually crave the food inside! I would come more often if it wasn't a bit of a trek from our house. We ordered the chicken salad, ginger chicken, pork with vermicelli and szechuan beef. My favorites were actually the two chicken dishes. Recently I've been a bit reluctant to order chicken, but both were cooked very well and the tamarind and ginger flavors really enhanced both. The pork was also great. Okay, maybe I liked these all because they are more Vietnamese than Chinese. Neither my husband nor I were fans of the only Chinese dish we ordered, the szechuan beef. We loved the other three enough to make up for it. We ordered way too much food (we didn't really even need the beef) because it's super reasonable. One warning, even if you call in your order, be prepared to wait! I did thinking it would be ready by the time I arrived (10-15 min drive, depending on traffic) and I still waited a good 15 minutes.

I was amazed how good the food was for fast food Chinese restaurant. I ordered hot and sour soup with crab rangoon. I would love to try it with the family at another time. I never would've thought you could get drive through chinese food that would taste good. I was pleasantly surprised!

Read the reviews!! Don't know where these people eat!! "Maybe a bad night for us"!! Worst egg roll ever!! More like a greasy spring roll burnt and mushy!! Sweetest Szechuan Chicken ever!! Not spicy more like maple syrup!! Cashew chicken more like celery chicken!! Never ever wrote a review before but will not go back!! :-(

My husband and I wanted to try a new Chinese place. I was sick of going to the same 2 places and so we randomly picked this place. We were pleasantly surprised by the food and price! I really liked my sweet and sour shrimp (~$7) and my husband got the shrimp vermicelli. He enjoyed his dish, and ate everything on it. It came with a broth sauce to dip the noodles and shrimp in, and he said it was very good. I got the crab rangoons, and they were good and cream cheesy (which I prefer) and Ryan got the spring rolls, and he said they were decent.

Wow am I glad I discovered this place! It's only been open a few months, but I really hope more people discover it soon. From the outside it looks like a hole-in-the-wall fast food Chinese restaurant, drive-thru and all, but I was thoroughly surprised and impressed. The food was made to order, steaming hot from the wok. For about $10 I got an order of crab rangoon (6 large pieces) and a very large entree. The crab rangoon had plenty of filling, I actually found chunks of crab! The sauce was a bit thin, but still tasty. Didn't really need the sauce since the filling was so yummy! For my entree I tried the beef with vermicelli noodles. It was deliciously seared pieces of beef over noodles, with fresh, crunchy bean sprouts and pickled shredded carrot. The sauce was fish sauce based, but not too "fishy". It had a sweet chili sauce flavor to it. I doused my entree with it! This was such a pleasant surprise, I will definitely be going back! Can't wait to try the chicken and shrimp salad with tamarind lime dressing... They also had a few daily specials, and today's included mussels. You definitely don't see that at a fast food Chinese chain!

Sang sang is an adorable Chinese restaurant that is now permanently in my weekly lunch rotation. I asked the waiter for a recommendation. He asked me if I was feeling adventurous and then recommended the coconut curry chicken. The dish was delicious with just the right amount of an adventurous edge. The egg drop soup is also spot on. Sang sang is cheap, friendly, and tasty. What more can you ask for?

  • Michael B.

What can I say that hasn't already been said by others? Nothing really, I've read all of the 5-star reviews and don't disagree with any of them. I've been here 5-6 times and it has been consistently fast, cheap, and most importantly hot, fresh, and delicious. Plenty of other reviews have already covered those attributes though, so I'd like to take a different approach and ask a question. Have you ever gone through a drive-thru and seriously considered taking another lap around the building to give them more money? I'm not joking. I would also like to offer a tip. If you want to be able to taste your meal, resist the urge to sample any part of it immediately upon receipt... it will burn your mouth. How many "fast food" places can you say that about?

  • Janet P.

I live in Downtown KC and have been deprived of good Chinese food. I've tried all the restaurants nearby and all of them are way too greasy, generic, and just not satisfying. Sang Sang reminds me of my favorite Chinese restaurant in my hometown. The food is fresh, hot, and delicious. It's also crazy cheap and fulfilling. I ordered three different entrees all for $19 total including rice. They give you great portions and I love having Chinese leftovers for next day! This will be my go-to spot even though it's pretty far away from me, it's worth it :)

Not too bad! 4.5 stars are hard to come by nowadays so, I wanted to see what all the hype was about. Is this place really that good!? My experience was very consistent with the reviews. The restaurant was clean, food was great and customer service was on point. Their prices are very reasonable too! I played it safe and ordered shrimp fried rice, although I prefer the St. Louis version (no veggies), I must admit, it was pretty good. My husband ordered the chicken fried rice and he thought it was so so. He's hard to please when it comes to Chinese food. Being from STL he said that we just can't get it right in KC lol. Anyways, we both thought the filling in the Crab Rangoon was a little salty but, overall, they were still edible although we wasted half the order. We'll add this to our take out rotation. Oh, they have a drive through too. Good idea!

After reading the reviews, I have to try it myself. It's cheap and the serving is plenty. It's one of the places where you get the most value for your money, a rarity now a days. Food doesn't taste like a typical Chinese food. Flavor is well balance. I hope it stays this way.

  • Mwineland25 ..

If you want to underpay for great fresh Chinese Food then this is the place for you. They could justify charging 1 and a half times what they're charging for the portions and goodness of this stuff. Do you like drive-thru? Duh. This place has drive-thru freaking good Chinese. Gotta try it.

    (5)
  • Zach B.

The prices are low and the food is excellent compared to similar Chinese restaurants. As other reviewers have noted, this is a place you'll want to add to your restaurant rotation. Do be aware that the drive thru is not very quick (but the food will be fresh). You might want to call it in ahead of time if you are in a hurry.

I will echo that while the building doesn't look like a good restaurant, the service, food and price are impeccable!
